4 Ways To Deal With Mold In Your Crawl Space

Posted on

Your crawl space is hiding out under your house, but that doesn't mean it doesn't impact your home and your health. That is why it is important to check on the crawl space condition and ensure that there isn't mold in your crawl space. If there is mold in your crawl space, there are multiple ways you can handle cleaning things up.

When cleaning up your area, you will want to work one small area at a time, effectively cleaning one area and then moving on another way.

#1: Protect the Area

To start with, you are going to want to place plastic sheets all over the floor. The purpose of the plastic sheets is to catch the mold as it falls as you clean. You will fold up and dispose of the plastic sheets when you are done cleaning the crawl space.

You will want to add lights to your crawl space so you can effectively see and get work done.

#2: Use a Foaming Spray

One way to clean your crawl space is by using a foaming spray. A foaming cleaning spray that is designed for mold removal is a great way to deal with mold in a crawl space. With this type of product, you spray the foam directly onto the mold. Then, you allow the foam to expand, which will help to loosen up the mold. Once the mold is loosened up, you can start to remove the mold and clean the surface.

#3: Soak the Remaining Mold

Third, you are going to want to soak any mold that is still present. You can soak the mold using a commercial spraying mold-killing product. Or you can use a homemade mold-killing mixture, such as vinegar and baking soda or borax. Apply the spray, and allow it to soak in. This will allow the spray to help kill the remaining mold. Don't scrub anything right now; this is about killing the mold.

#4: Scrub Away Remaining Mold

Fourth, you are going to want to scrub away the remaining mold. Take a stiff brush and scrub away at any mold you can still see. This process is going to take time; however, it is vital to remove all visible mold. You want to get rid of all the residue you see in the crawl space, working one area at a time.

When cleaning up mold in a crawl space, it is vital to protect yourself. You are going to want to wear a respirator, goggles, and a bodysuit. In addition, you are going to want to bag up everything you clean with and properly dispose of it to keep the mold from spreading into your home. You can also call in a formal mold remediation company to handle cleaning up your crawl space for you.
